Does your idea need a website or a web app?
The distinction matters less than the job people need to do. Here is how we choose an appropriate starting point.
A website primarily helps people understand, trust and contact a business. A web application helps people complete an ongoing task. Many new products eventually need both, but they do not always need both on day one.
Choose around behaviour
If visitors mainly need to learn, compare, read or enquire, begin with a fast, focused website. If they need accounts, saved data, collaboration, calculations or repeated workflows, the core is a web application.
Avoid an artificial split
Modern frameworks can serve marketing pages and application journeys from one system. The important decision is not the label. It is which journeys need to be public, which need persistent state and which deserve the first development investment.
Leave the right doors open
A focused website can validate positioning and bring in early conversations while the application is being shaped. A well-structured application can add richer public content later without a rebuild.
Start with the smallest coherent system that supports the next business milestone, then extend it deliberately.
